1984
Born February 22, 1984., in Ardmore Oklahoma, (Carter County) at Ardmore Adventist Medical Center.
Delivery was induced, followed by some complications due to Derek's left arm being wrapped around the back of his neck.
After a 14 hour delivery time, a healthy baby boy entered our world, weighing in at 8lbs.11oz. Dr.James Turrentine in attendance.

1986
Derek and his family relocated to Phoenix Ariz. where they resided for 6 months until being transferred to Honolulu, Hawaii.

1986-1996
Derek enjoyed his early years in Hawaii, spending every possible day at the beach, where he soon learned how to swim, snorkle and boogie board. He took to the water, as if  he were a natural born swimmer. He certainly had "NO FEAR"!
At the age of 5, Derek asked his mom to make him a "clown costume" Not because it was Halloween, but because he wanted to make people laugh. He had spent some time at the age of 4, in the Childrens Hospital with "cat scratch fever", and it was after he was discharged that he wanted to be "Squeege the Clown"  He met a clown by the name of "STEVO" who encouraged Derek to preform and showed him a few tricks of the trade. At times Stevo & Squeege preformed together, but Derek liked to visit other sick kids and the elderly on his own, and ALWAYS brought a smile to every face he met!

July 4 1996
In May of 1996 Shoya, Derek's mum took very ill and a tough decission had to be made. The Drs. in Hawaii told us Shoya's chances for survial were a 50/50. The Drs. in Hawaii did all they could, but they were not able to coninue treatment and advised the family to consider all options. It was with very heavy hearts that the decission made, was to return to the mainland for on going treatment. As Derek's mother, and Clint's wife, I believed that if my treatments did not take, my "guy's" would be closer to Clint's family and that the family would be able to help them out the best they could.
I, Shoya spent a year in the Universary of New Mexico Hospital
and after many, many surgeries and painful procedures I was on my way to making a full recovery.
Derek went through so many changes and should never have heard that his mom might die. He stuck to me like glue when I was allowed to come home betwen surgeries and would lay in the bed with me and hold my hand. "I love you mom, please get well" are words I will treasure for a lifetime. How could I have been so daft to think Derek was okay. He held so much hurt and fear in his heart, thinking his mom was going to leave him forever.
Derek's behavior started to change in a very negative way, and he started getting in to major mischief, skipping school, smoking  and just getting into trouble all the time. Perhaps going back to Oklahoma was the thing to do. He would be close to his grandma, aunts & uncles, cousins and in the country away the the "Big City" life. Oh how it back fired! How in the world was this young boy who grew up on the South Pacific Islands, going to fit in with people who had never been any further away than the next county? .....to be continued
